Kordil Gravity Corer and Piston Corer

Kordil Gravity Corer and Piston Corer are sediment sampling systems for collecting seabed cores in coastal and deep-water environments. Both designs feature a 68 mm sample diameter, stabilizing fins, a replaceable PVC inner liner and a core catcher to reduce sample loss during recovery. Their customizable construction supports marine sediment investigations, geological surveys and sedimentology research.
Gravity Corer: Seabed Core Sampling
The Kordil Gravity Corer uses its own weight to penetrate the seabed and collect sediment cores up to 6 metres long. Its stainless-steel barrel provides a robust sampling chamber, while stabilizing fins assist vertical entry. The specified assembly weighs 600 kg including additional balancing weights.
A removable PVC liner facilitates sample extraction from the barrel. The replaceable core catcher helps retain the sediment, and the cutter can be exchanged for maintenance. This low-maintenance design is suitable for sampling deep-sea sediments and the mud-water transition zone.
Piston Corer: Soft and Cohesive Sediments
The Kordil Piston Corer adds a trigger-operated piston mechanism to the sediment coring system. Piston action reduces internal friction to support the recovery of longer sediment cores, particularly in soft mud and sticky, cohesive deposits. A mechanical trigger and cable arrangement sets the free-fall distance.
The piston corer also incorporates stabilizing fins, a replaceable PVC liner and an exchangeable core catcher and cutter. Its total weight is 600 kg including balancing weights. Applications include marine chemistry, geological investigations and sedimentology research.
