A forward-looking imaging sonar for real-time underwater observation. Compact and Wide versions support obstacle awareness, search and recovery, diver assistance and subsea inspection. This is an imaging system: its forward-looking view serves a different purpose from a conventional downward-looking bathymetric survey.

Imaging where optical visibility is limited

WBMS FLS provides forward-looking acoustic imagery to help identify underwater objects and obstacles. Compact and Wide versions address different mounting and field-of-view requirements. ROV operations, search and recovery, diver support and structure inspection require a balance between range and target detail. Imaging sonar output is distinct from a georeferenced bathymetric surface and is not, on its own, an automatic collision-avoidance system.

Applications and survey workflow

Forward-looking imagery helps operators understand submerged obstacles and inspect objects where optical visibility is poor. Platform position, sonar orientation and the selected range determine the context of the image.

Before mobilisation, the survey team defines the coordinate system, vertical reference and required deliverables. Mounting geometry, sensor offsets and time synchronisation are checked as one installation. Positioning quality, vessel motion and sound-speed conditions are reviewed during acquisition so that the final dataset can be assessed against the project specification.

Integration and deliverables

The selected hardware and software configuration determines the available outputs and interfaces. A practical workflow includes installation checks, a trial line, field quality control and documented processing. Depending on the sensor, deliverables may include a bathymetric surface, an inspection image, a point cloud or an interpreted sediment profile.
