NORBIT Sub-Bottom Profiler (iSBP)

NORBIT Sub-Bottom Profiler (iSBP)

An integrated sub-bottom profiler used with WINGHEAD X or WBMS X to acquire seabed bathymetry and sediment profiles within a common georeferenced workflow. It supports inshore geophysical investigation, sediment characterisation and the interpretation of shallow buried layers.

Sediment profiles alongside bathymetry

iSBP integrates with WINGHEAD X or WBMS X to investigate the seabed surface and underlying layers within a common georeferenced workflow. Coastal geophysics, sediment characterisation and shallow buried-feature investigations benefit from interpreting both datasets together. SES3 full-waveform raw data is retained for subsequent processing. Penetration up to 30 m depends on sediment conditions; hard layers, gas and coarse material can limit acoustic penetration.

Applications and survey workflow

Sub-bottom profiles add information on sediment boundaries below the mapped seabed. Penetration varies with geology, acoustic noise and operating settings; interpreted layers should be evaluated alongside other geophysical or geotechnical evidence.

Before mobilisation, the survey team defines the coordinate system, vertical reference and required deliverables. Mounting geometry, sensor offsets and time synchronisation are checked as one installation. Positioning quality, vessel motion and sound-speed conditions are reviewed during acquisition so that the final dataset can be assessed against the project specification.

Integration and deliverables

The selected hardware and software configuration determines the available outputs and interfaces. A practical workflow includes installation checks, a trial line, field quality control and documented processing. Depending on the sensor, deliverables may include a bathymetric surface, an inspection image, a point cloud or an interpreted sediment profile. Kordil can evaluate the platform, operating environment and intended use when defining the system configuration.
