S-Boom Seismic Source
S-Boom Seismic Source
Applied Acoustics S-Boom is a high-power boomer source for high and ultra-high resolution sub-bottom surveys. Three AA252 plates form a focused source arrangement that delivers a repeatable pulse. The system provides an alternative to sparkers for suitable coastal and offshore projects, including freshwater and low-salinity environments.

Three-plate source arrangement
The three plates are carried on a catamaran frame and work as a coordinated acoustic source. Typical shot energy is 700–1,000 J, with a maximum of 1,000 J per pulse. A compatible fast-charging CSP supply supports the specified repetition capability. The power supply, cable and thermal interlock are selected together so that the complete source installation matches the intended operating cycle.
Applications and acquisition
S-Boom can be used with single-channel or multi-channel hydrophone arrays for geological mapping, marine construction investigations and coastal site surveys. The source and receiver tow paths, separation and navigation offsets are defined before acquisition. Recording the shot timing and vessel position allows the resulting reflections to be related to the survey line and interpreted in the processing workflow.
Survey performance
The source produces a short pulse of 300–500 microseconds depending on energy. Its directed beam pattern is intended to concentrate sound energy compared with conventional single-plate arrangements. Actual resolution and penetration depend on sediment conditions, water conditions, towing and recording settings. When comparing source options, consider the required geological information and receiver configuration as well as nominal energy. Vessel deck space and deployment equipment should accommodate the complete catamaran and plate assembly.
